Step 1: Figure out what actually matters
Before opening a single textbook, list every exam you're behind on, and for each one, note two things: how much it's worth toward your grade, and how big the gap actually is — is this a "review what I half-know" gap, or a "I've genuinely never seen this unit" gap? Those need very different amounts of time.
Check the exam format too. A multiple-choice final rewards fast, broad review. An essay or problem-set exam rewards being able to produce answers, not just recognize them — which changes what "studying" should look like for the hours you have left.
Step 2: Rebuild an outline fast — don't reread everything
Reading every chapter start to finish is the slowest possible way to figure out what a course covered. Instead, pull the topic list from the syllabus, the table of contents, or past exams if your professor has posted any, and build a one-page outline of everything that's fair game. That outline is now your map — you only go deep on the parts of it you're actually missing.

A messy stack of screenshots is slower to study from than five clean topic pages, even if it took longer to reread the originals.
Step 3: Use active recall even under a compressed timeline
The instinct under time pressure is to reread faster. Do the opposite: test yourself first, on every topic, before you reread anything. Step 4: A realistic day-by-day plan
What this looks like depends on how much time is actually left.
3 days out:
- Day 1: Triage every exam. Build the topic outline for your weakest two subjects. Convert the biggest gaps into structured notes.
- Day 2: Active recall on everything from Day 1 — flashcards, blank-page recall, practice questions. Reread only what you got wrong.
- Day 3: One full practice test or past exam per subject if available. Spend remaining time only on what it exposes as weak.
7 days out:
- Days 1–2: Triage all exams. Build topic outlines and structured notes for every subject, prioritized by grade weight and gap size.
- Days 3–5: Active recall and practice questions daily, rotating between subjects rather than mastering one before moving to the next.
- Days 6–7: Full practice tests per subject, targeted review of whatever they expose, and an early night before the first exam.
Step 5: Don't cut the thing that protects the rest of the plan
Sleep is usually the first thing to go under pressure, and it's specifically counterproductive here — memory consolidation, the process that turns what you studied today into something you can recall tomorrow, happens largely during sleep. An all-nighter doesn't just cost you the next day's energy; it undercuts the retention of everything you crammed the night before.
